Freezer Pork Information

Pork is generally produced from young animals (6 to 7 months old) that weigh from 175 to 240 pounds. Much of a hog is cured and made into ham, bacon and sausage. Uncured meat is called "fresh pork." 

Our Pigs

Our 2024 butcher date is February 26th.

You will pay us for the pig and then work directly with the butcher to choose your cuts, pay the processing fees, and arrange pick-up. 

Our fee will be determined closer to butcher time and is a portion of the price we paid for the piglets, feed, and any additional care that was needed. In the past, this has averaged $225 per 1/2 pig.

Hanging Weight

For example, a live 300 lb pig yields a hanging weight of 216 lbs (108 lbs per half). 

Hanging weight is the weight once the pig is slaughtered and organs are removed. This hanging weight includes the bones, head, cartilage, skin and other bits. Not all of this is edible so once removed you are left with 140-150 lbs (70-75 lbs per half) of meat for your freezer. 

Hanging weight is used to calculate processing fees.

Depending on the cuts you select, you will get 70-80% of your hanging weight in consumable meat.

Processing Information

We use Brower Farms in Brown City MI for our processing

Processing fees are based on hanging weight

Meat is double-wrapped. First with plastic wrap and then in waxed-lined freezer paper

All meat is labeled with the product, weight, and date of packaging

Freezer Space Needed

A general rule is you need 1 cubic foot of freezer space for every 15-20 lbs of meat. For reference, the interior of a milk crate is slightly more than a cubic foot. For a half hog you need 3.5 cubic feet and for a whole hog you will need 7 cubic feet.
